Buffalo Tofu Wings

on May 2, 2012

This weekend, I went to Dave and Busters, an adult arcade.  The aroma of hot, crispy, spicy buffalo wings was everywhere and quite enticing.  So, I decided to attempt my own version at home!  Accompaniments: fresh seasonal corn and a side of spiced barley to get in some fiber.

Tofu

Ingredients:

  • 1 package extra firm tofu
  • Garlic powder, onion powder, salt and pepper
  • cayenne pepper
  • 1 tbs thai basil chili sauce
  • 1/8 cup flour
  • 1/8 cup nutritional yeast
  • Cayenne pepper (to taste)
  • 1/4 inch of canola for pan frying
  • Heinz Buffalo Sauce – 2oz container

Instructions:

  • Prep Tofu (see here for my post on how to do this!), cut into large squares
  • Spread chili sauce with fingers over one side of the tofu (this stuff is hot!)
  • Let sit overnight or move on to next step
  • Mix together flour, nutritional yeast, and cayenne pepper on a plate with a fork
  • Drop tofu pieces in breading and coat generously

Note:  This is messy!  But fun 😉

  • Preheat canola oil in frying pan (you can test the heat by flicking a drop of water in the pan, if it sizzles, it’s ready!)
  • Place tofu pieces in oil gently, I did 1/3 of the batch at a time so as to not overcrowd the pan
  • Let cook without moving until you can see a crust formed on the bottom, then flip each piece to cook the other side
  • Once both sides are brown and crispy, transfer to a plate lined with paper towels to soak up the excess oil

MMM Crispy

  • Toss pieces in a zip lock back filled with 1/3 of the buffalo sauce until coated, then set aside
  • Repeat with the rest of the tofu

Barley

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup uncooked barley
  • 4 cups water
  • 3/4 ts garlic powder, onion powder and cumin
  • 1/4 ts oregano

Instructions

  • Bring water to a boil
  • Add barley and seasonings (to lock in the flavor)
  • simmer for 40-45 min
  • Place in tupperware to cool and season generously with the same spices

Now, this is likely the least healthy tofu I’ve made (due to the frying) but man oh man was it good.  Completely satisfied my craving for some good ol’ fashioned bar food.  Combined with some fresh sweet corn baked in the oven and some fiber rich barley, definitely a comforting meal 🙂

Also, the Heinz hot sauce was a rather fortuitous purchase.  I had already marinated the tofu with the chili sauce, but I don’t have any hot sauce at home and I was pondering how I would get that buffalo wing feel.  I stopped at 711 for a soda on the way to work, and lo and behold, there in the checkout with other condiments, a single size of buffalo sauce!  I figured, for .99, it was worth a taste.  If it was bad, I just wouldn’t use it.  Wound up being perfect!
